Arctium lappa, commonly called greater burdock, gobō, edible burdock, lappa, beggar's buttons, thorny burr, or happy major is a Eurasian species of plants in the Aster family.
Burdock is a truly superior tonic herb, and is used as both a preventive and a medicinal plant. Burdock is rich in iron, magnesium, manganese, silicon and thiamine, as well as a host of other vitamins and minerals. It is simply the best herb for the skin and can be used internally and externally for eczema, psoriasis, acne and other skin related imbalances. It is specific for the liver, and because of its pleasant flavour, it is often formulated with other less tasty ‘liver herbs’.
Cooling and alkalizing, burdock is used for treating the stagnant condition of the blood and is an excellent blood purifier. It promotes healthy kidney function and expels uric acid from the body, so it's helpful for gout and rheumatism.
Burdock makes a fine tasting tea and can be adapted by teenagers skin problems, by serving it with juice or other herbal teas. The tea can be served with meals as a digestive aid.
Tea preparation:
Put 1 teaspoon into a cup and fill with boiling water. Let the tea brew for 5 minutes. Add honey and/or lemon, if desired.
